The Meiji-born child literature author famous for "Non-chan Rides On Cloud." says that Japanese women before the war did not have not only friends of the opposite sex but also those of the same sex. If they had friends, they lost touch after graduation. She also says that she had friends but thinking it is because she was not married, she felt something "sad and funny."
